Dr. Berkowitz received his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, his medical degree from the University of Illinois, and did his Primary Care Internal Medicine residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine within the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University and a Fellow in the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

Dr. Berkowitz's clinical experience includes work as a Primary Care Physician and teacher in both a large academic medical center and a community-based clinic. His academic informatics background includes work in medical decision making and medical record theories, with academic informatics research experience at both the University of Illinois College of Medicine and Harvard Medical School. Clinical informatics experience includes over a decade of healthcare IT consulting and positions such as the Medical Director for an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) vendor, co-founder and CEO of a start-up venture that focused on Internet-based data collection and analysis, Medical Director for a global Internet consulting company, and VP/Chief Medical Officer of an eBusiness consulting company.

Dr. Berkowitz currently is an Internal Medicine physician and the Medical Director of Clinical Information Systems for the largest primary care group in Chicago- where he has helped lead an enterprise wide EMR project resulting in a paperless clinical workflow for all their physicians.  Dr. Berkowitz is also the founder and President of his own consulting firm (Back 9 Healthcare Consulting, Inc.) where he advises an assortment of healthcare entities on how to effectively use information technology and the Internet to support their organizational goals. Dr. Berkowitz is an active speaker and has authored multiple articles addressing topics such as Internet strategies in healthcare, physician adoption strategies, electronic health record theories, EHR-directed disease management and wireless computing in healthcare.

Dr. Berkowitz sits on the Editorial Board of Healthcare Informatics magazine, and his past editorial board involvement includes Modern Physician and e.MD periodicals.  Dr. Berkowitz also serves on the Advisory Boards for several organizations, including the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS) and the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Health Management Program.  Dr. Berkowitz additionally serves as a physician advisor to the ABC Medical News Unit and works with a wide variety of movie, television and theatrical productions in Chicago.
